Introduction to the Scope and Sequence

Since the completion of the Ocean Literacy Eessential Principles and Fundamental Concepts in 2005, COSEE California and COSEE West have continued to work with hundreds of scientists and science educators to develop a Scope and Sequence to provide guidance to curriculum developers, standards committees, informal science educators, and schoolteachers regarding how ocean science concepts can be taught throughout the K-12 curriculum.

The Scope and Sequence shows, graphically,

(1) the science concepts underlying the Principles and how they are connected;

(2) developmental appropriateness – what students need to know to help them understand the higher-level concepts;

(3) standards correlations; and

(4) how instruction of the concepts might “flow”.

These graphical representations are referred to as Concept Flow Diagrams (or sometimes CFDs or even "Flows"). There are a total of 28 CFDs for the seven Essential Principles and four grade bands (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12) . Navigation to the CFDs is available by clicking on this symbol:
