COSEE-West (one of the Centers for Ocean SciencesEducation Excellence) invites you to participate in an exciting workshop, “Ocean Observing Systems (OOS),” to be held this October 23 – November 13, 2009. This invitation is open to anyone interested in learning more about the way scientists and researchers use remote sensing technologies to study our oceans
Participants will have the unique opportunity to interact online with faculty and research scientists as well as educators from around the world.
This workshop is free.
Presentations
Lecture available starting 10/23/2009: Dr. Rebecca Shipe (UCLA) will discuss “Harmful Algal Blooms in Southern California Coastal Waters.” She will be online from 10/26/09 through 10/30/09 to discuss how remote sensing instruments like the Santa Monica Bay Observatory mooring contributes to her work on phytoplankton and harmful algal blooms (HABs) in Santa Monica Bay.
Lecture available starting 10/30/2009: Dr. Edith Widder (Ocean Research & Conservation Association) will discuss “Secret Lights in the Sea.” She will be online from 11/2/09 through 11/6/09 to discuss her presentation. Dr. Widder will focus on her work on bioluminescent deep-sea organisms and the remote sensing tools (“Eye-in-the-Sea”) that helps to make that research possible.
Educator panel available during 11/9/2009 through 11/13/09: Educators that have incorporated OOS data, topics and materials into their classrooms will lead discussions on why they decided to incorporate OOS into their classroom, how those lesson plans worked out, how they could be modified, etc. Come see how to put all these cutting edge technologies to work for you in your classroom.
Registration to join the workshop is available once you have logged on. Log on and click the register link.

Five Years of Lectures Online
During the first five years of our COSEE WEST project from 2002-2007 the College of Exploration recorded lectures given by scientists in the Los Angeles region and put them online. You can view them now by signing in on this page.
Some of these lectures and other additional material formed the basis for online teacher workshops that were offered. These workshops are now read-only, but are still available online by log-in above right.
