The College of Exploration has been a partner with Caucus from its beginning in 1991. CAUCUS software was developed in the middle 80's as a text based computer conferencing system by Charles Roth, who is the owner and senior programmer of Caucus.com and the CAUCUS software. In 2005 Caucus was became available as open source software.
Throughout the evolution and development of CAUCUS we have used it as the key component of our online learning platform. The software has its home in academia at Eastern Michigan University. EMU along with a number of other universities and academic insitutions use Caucus as their online learning environment.
The College of Exploration can offer advice and guidance on using the software in a variety of settings. CAUCUS can be used to support any conversation in text form online. That is its strength, the software is almost transparent to the process. The focus is on the conversation and on the learning, not the technology.
The pedagocial underpinnings of the design are constructivist and cooperative in nature. The evolution from text based to web-based to database supported has been a constant co-development between users and programmers. This continues today. The College of Exploration continues to support development and enhancements to the software.
