Who We Are

Overview

The College of Exploration, is a not-for-profit educational organization, with locations and activities in Virginia, Connecticut, Washington in the USA and Dorset in the UK.  We design, develop, deliver, and evaluate education programs, workshops, courses, events and collaborative learning environments for learners of all ages, with a particular emphasis on Web-based courses and workshops for educators, teachers, and students. The College of Exploration has IRS 501c3 status in the USA

Mission and Philosophy

Our mission is to provide learners with opportunities to explore their inner and outer worlds and to come to know more about themselves and their relationships with the world around them and with other people.

Our approach places an emphasis on the following:

  • leadership and innovation
  • environmental awareness and science education, especially marine and ocean.
  • constructivist learning
  • transformative learning and change with and through technology
  • professional development, adult education, and collegiality
  • collaborative learning environments
  • adapting research-based pedagogy to education technology
  • ethical application of technology to learning and society as a whole

The Team

    Peter D. Tuddenham
    President/Executive Director
    Peter has over 25 years experience working for 4 Fortune 500 companies as a senior manager in the areas of strategy, communications, learning, and systems and networks.  He has served as guest faculty at the U.S. Army War College in Pennsylvania. He served as an officer in the Corps of Royal Engineers in the UK, Germany and the USA after commissioning from the RMA Sandhurst.  Peter studied learning systems design at the Open University in the UK and Saybrook Institute in the USA. . He has a Bachelors of Science degree in Business  from Regis College, Denver.

    Kristina O Bishop, EdD, MBA
    Vice President and Academic Director
    Tina has worked in education and business since 1983. She has significant experience with companies contracted to the US Government and with educational programs for teachers and schools. Tina has an MBA and EdD  from Virginia Tech, an MA in Measurement and Statistics from the University of Maryland and BA in Psychology from Ithaca College.

    William Bragg, PhD
    Director, Online Campus
    William's PhD was a dual specialization: Instructional Technology and Research/Evaluation Methodology. His research has included such topics as: constructivist learning, adult education, professional development, technology-mediated learning, and online interaction. He has a M.Ed in Educational Leadership and BS in Elementary. Education. Dr. Bragg has worked in online education since 1996, specializing in professional development, online interaction, and managing events.

    Melissa Ryan, MS
    Education Program Coordinator
    Melissa has more than ten years of experience in marine research, environmental education, and environmental policy. She specializes in environmental science curriculum development. Melissa has a B.S. in Marine Science from the University of Connecticut, and a Master's degree in Natural Health from Clayton College of Natural Health. She lives in Connecticut, where she works at a distance with the College of Exploration.

    Scott Carley, Ph.D.
    Director of Simulation Learning Environments
    Scott
    is heading efforts to develop online learning environments based on simulation models. He is a knowledge architect with over twenty years of experience in designing and developing computer- and Internet-based systems and processes that support environmental and natural resources management, collaborative learning, professional development/training and strategic planning. He holds a PhD in  theoretical chemical physics, philosophy of science, and systems ecology from the University of Waterloo (Canada).

    Virginia Little, Ph.D
    High School English Program and Evaluation
    Virginia Little, Ph.D. in Learning and Change in Human Systems, has facilitated online learning communities since 1996. She designed the online literacy center,
    BEAT St. acronym for the intersection of business, education, arts and technology. She continues her online work with teachers and students in Creative Writing and World Literature, as well as Teaching with Technology, Online Communications and Facilitation, and Progam Evaluation. Her dissertation focused on designing, implementing and assessing the online program she created. Dr. Little specializes in empowering literacies, online communities, porgram evaluation, secondary English and teacher education.

    Sandy Masquith
    Network Systems Specialist
    Sandy has 15 years of experience on a range of network systems, from small office to large scale gaming networks.
