Hi, I am Director of the Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Southern California. The Institute has its main facilities on Catalina Island, 20 miles offshore of Los Angeles. We also coordinate research and education on the main campus in downtown Los Angeles. The Wrigley Institute coordinates research on pollution in the coastal ocean and on global risk analysis for environmental and natural hazard risks. This work has both a scientific component and a social component as we bring different groups together to use the science to help guide decisions by businesses and society. Much of the research concerns the effect of climate on these risk-based decisions and El Nino is a huge source of climate variability in this context.
