This is one of the most common fish on the reef, the Sergeant major (Abudefduf saxatilis) named for the vertical bars on its back. They live in the mid-water and are planktivores meaning they eat (vore as in carnivore) plankton or floating organisms.  They are frequently in groups rather than single and often hang around you as you go diving.
