Examples of Projects
A list of some of the projects that College of Exploration has completed (not inlcuding current or ongoing projects) - with a description, so you can get an idea of the type of education activities in which we are involved:

Collaboration with DoDEA / DODDS

The College of Exploration (TCOE) has worked closely with the Department of Defense Education Acitity / Department of Defense Dependents Schools on many projects. These projects have primarily involved the evaluation of technology-based programs and the development of teacher professional development courses and workshops.

Projects (see details of each below)
    Presidential Technology Initiative
    JASON Project Evaluation
    Lester Electronic School
    Learning Logic
    Project-Based Learning Course

Presidential Technology Initiative (1997)
TCOE has worked closely with Presidential Technology Initiative (PTI) staff at Department of Defense Dependents Schools to provide an online learning space for teachers and administrators in PTI. The Presidential Technology Initiative is a project funded by the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) to develop effective courseware in critical need areas in the K-12 environment. It was established in response to the President's challenge, (January 1996) to the nation to develop effective courseware in all subject areas and to provide every teacher with the professional development they need to help students use and learn through technology. The goal of the PTI project is to develop and implement effective strategies for curriculum and technology integration.

We completed four major tasks in support of PTI. The tasks were completed under the main project: to develop a Web-based Internet curriculum integration course. This course was developed and implemented through an online learning environment called the “PTI Online Conference Center” which TCOE staff created and maintained.

The tasks were:
Explore the learning needs of the PTI test bed sites.
Develop specifications for the Internet curriculum integration course.
Produce and deliver the course.
Provide evaluation to enable further development and support.

Evaluation of DoDDS JASON Project (1996)
The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) has been conducting the JASON Project in its schools since 1994. TCOE completed an evaluation of the JASON project from April to December 1996. The JASON project, sponsored by the JASON Foundation, provides live satellite links to classrooms from scientific researchers working in remote areas. In addition to the students viewing the broadcasts of these science expeditions, they also are involved in specially-created JASON curriculum activities and local field work. Key educational components of the JASON project are distance learning technologies combined with innovative curriculum, community partnerships, and teacher professional development.

Lester Middle School Electronic School Evaluation Project (1996-1997)
TCOE assessed the results of the computing and networking technology installation of Lester Middle School and creation of the DoDDS Electronic School. The team looked at the outcomes related to curriculum integration, use of technology, and lessons learned over the three years of implementation in the school. The team looked at the electronic school as a learning organization--to see the value added from a pioneering effort to create a networked learning environment. DoDDS also wanted to get a sense of the evolution of the electronic school as technology and its use and application evolved.

Learning Logic Evaluation Project (1996-1997)
Learning Logic is an interactive mathematics program, used to teach Algebra. The program was created by the National Science Center Foundation. Students using the Learning Logic program are instructed in traditional Algebra with coaching support through software.  TCOE performed an evaluation of Learning Logic within the DoDDS system to ascertain the benefits and drawbacks of the program. The evaluation examined the learning and curriculum outcomes, behavioral and attitudinal changes, and the use of technology in the classroom

Project-Based Learning and Technology Integration into Curriculum (Graduate Course) (1997)
TCOE assisted in teaching an onsite course about project-based learning and technology integration in curriculum for DoDDS teachers in the summer of  1997 and then offered an online three-credit follow-up course in the fall of 1997.

Online Workshops for a variety of clients and partners

The College of Exploration has designed, implemented, managed, and evaluated a number of very successful online workshops since 1998. Mostly, the focus has been on bringing together scientists and other experts with educators for professional development purposes. These events have been international

Project Ocean Steward - Online Expedition and Teacher Workshop
October 2000-National Geographic Society’s Sustainable Seas Expeditions, NOAA’s National Marine Sanctuaries Program, NASA, & USC Sea Grant Project Ocean STEWARD (Students and Teachers Empowered With Access to Real Data) With Sustainable Seas Expedition of National Geographic; hosted a month-long (October 2000) online workshop for 328 educators, entitled Project Ocean STEWARD. Purpose was to gain an understanding of ocean topics and marine sanctuaries

Tech 21
Hosted an online conference for Department of Defense Education Activity technology coordinators and other educators (September 2000) for planning for technology implementation and technology standards for their school system

Exploring Ocean Data
Under a National Science Foundation grant, working in partnership with the Bermuda Biological Station for Research, offered a month long online workshop for teachers entitled (May 2000).  Fifty teachers, including a core group from Miami-Dade Public Schools interacted with scientists from Bermuda to learn about oceanography and share ideas and lesson plans for using ocean data in the classroom.

NASA-JPL Water and the Solar System
Online Workshop NASA-JPL (11-99)--250 teachers worldwide participated in an online workshop, in which they interacted with NASA scientists and teacher colleagues for a month in a private web-based conference area.

To HAB and HAB Not
NOAA USC Sea Grant (11-99) Harmful Algal Blooms Workshop for Teachers and General Public -100  participants. In addition there was an online forum for scientists in preparation for this teacher workshop (April 1999)

NOAA USC Sea Grant El Niño Workshop
75 participants interacted online for five weeks with scientists and educators from around the world.
¨Coral Reef Camera web-based curriculum materials and associated teacher face to face training workshop (6-99) with Bermuda Biological Station for Research

Sustainable Seas Expedition of National Geographic:
3 different sets of Coral Reef Online Workshop for Teachers, Jul-August; October 2001; and Feb 2002. Emphasis on coral reef education, research, and conservation. Each set of workshops had over 400 educators online.

Example of Distance Learning / Scientific Research partnerships:

The College of Exploration partnered with the Bermuda Biological Station for Research Station on several distance learning projects:

BBSR and Florida International University Joint Partnership Project

Classroom BATS (Bermuda Atlantic Time Series) was a National Science Foundation-funded program which was designed to help educators effectively use web-based ocean resources in their curriculum development and teaching. Classroom BATS links BBSR scientists and data with prospective science teachers in the College of Education at Florida International University. This link was mediated via a virtual campus run by TCOE. The goal of Classroom BATS was to create an on-line learning environment that allows science teachers to use real ocean data to conduct inquiry-based learning in their grades 6-12 classrooms.

Coral Camera and Coral Web site project

The Richard & Rhoda Goldman Fund provided a grant to the Bermuda Biological Station for Research to work with TCOE. Together we are developing Web-based curriculum resources on coral reefs using a Web-based camera that will be placed on the coral reefs of Bermuda. The camera is the keystone of a reef education program that emphasizes the importance of corals on a global scale through interactive, Web-based learning. The Web site provides extensive information about Bermuda’s coral reefs.

Exploring Global Communities Course: NonSuch Island
Nonsuch Island is one of the islands of Bermuda. Dr. David Wingate, Environmental Officer for Bermuda, has devoted his life to restoring Nonsuch to as near to the condition it was in before colonisation in the 1600’s. We hosted an onsite course that included the study of Nonsuch.
