The Bermuda Biological Station for Research

Mission

The BBSR's mission is three-fold: to conduct research of the highest quality from the special perspective of a mid-ocean island; to educate future scientists; and to provide well-equipped facilities and responsive staff support for visiting scientists, faculty and students from around the world.

Location

Bermuda's mid-Atlantic location and its situation in a marine system that includes elements of both northern and southern Atlantic fauna and flora, with unique northerly incursions of reef building corals and mangroves make it an ideal place for the study of the environment for scientists from around the globe. Because of its small size and mild climate, a great variety of habitats are readily accessible throughout the year with a minimum of effort.

The BBSR is situated at the east end of Bermuda, near the airport and away from major tourist centres, on fifteen acres of well-kept tropical parkland. The physical plant includes laboratories, offices, a library, conference rooms, workshops and residential units plus a small fleet of collecting boats, workboats and the 115' seagoing flagship, R/V Weatherbird II.  These facilities are available to the resident scientific staff and to visiting scientists and students from all over the world.
